The OLED MacBook pro debuts on M5 silicon

The Die Brief Desk, after Die Brief

The OLED touchscreen MacBook Pro debuts at an Apple event on October 28, 2026, but ships with the same M5 Pro and M5 Max chips as the current generation, with M7 Pro and M7 Max not arriving until late 2027.

The headline product of the October 28 event is a display and form-factor refresh, not a silicon upgrade. Apple is skipping M6 Pro, M6 Max, and M6 Ultra entirely, jumping from the M5 lineup to M7.

The M5 Pro and M5 Max debuted in March 2026. By the time the OLED models arrive, they will be roughly seven months old. Apple is "pretty much done" with M6 chips, per Mark Gurman, who says the company will go straight from M5 Pro and M5 Max to the M7 lineup.

The same event includes an M6 entry-level 14-inch MacBook Pro, an M6 iMac, and an OLED iPad mini. The M6 chip debuted in the Mac mini and is being deployed in lower-tier products while the high-end touchscreen MacBooks stay on M5 silicon.

Apple is decoupling the display refresh from the silicon cycle. By shipping the OLED on M5 Pro and M5 Max, Apple can launch the form-factor change on schedule while the M7 lineup matures. The M6 chip serves as a bridge for entry-level products while the high-end line jumps directly to M7, creating a two-tier strategy where touchscreen premium models and entry-level models sit on different silicon generations simultaneously.
