The Die Brief Desk, after Die Brief

Apple put an M6 in the 14-inch MacBook Pro on Tuesday and described the laptop it already sells. The release does not add a touch screen or an OLED panel. Wednesday's event is still on the calendar.

On October 27, Apple published a press release for a 14-inch MacBook Pro with M6. Pre-orders open October 28. The laptop reaches customers and stores on Friday, November 6. The U.S. price starts at $1,999, and at $1,899 with education pricing.

The chip is the change. The spec sheet lists a 12-core CPU, split into two super cores, four performance cores, and six efficiency cores, and a 12-core GPU. Apple says that is two more CPU cores and two more GPU cores than before, with up to 30 percent faster graphics than the M5 and up to 25 percent faster on-device AI work. Apple also says the Dual 16-core Neural Engine is up to 1.9 times the M5. Those figures are Apple's comparisons.

Memory starts at 16GB. At that size the spec sheet prints 153GB/s. The 24GB and 32GB options print 170GB/s. The release's phrase, up to 170GB/s, is the higher configuration. Storage on the sheet starts at 1TB, then 2TB and 4TB.

The enclosure is the one already on the 14-inch page. Height is 0.61 inch, width 12.31 inches, depth 8.71 inches. The M6 weighs 3.4 pounds. The M5 Pro and M5 Max in that same size weigh 3.5 and 3.6 pounds. Apple did not publish a second 14-inch shape.

The display is a 14.2-inch Liquid Retina XDR, 3024 by 1964, with ProMotion up to 120Hz and 1600 nits peak for HDR. Nano-texture glass is an option. The spec sheet lists Touch ID on the keyboard. It does not list a touch screen, and it does not call the panel OLED.

Ports on the M6 are three Thunderbolt 4 ports, at up to 40Gb/s, plus HDMI, MagSafe 3, an SDXC slot, and a headphone jack. The 14-inch M5 Pro and M5 Max, still on the same page, use Thunderbolt 5 at up to 120Gb/s. The 16-inch page is still M5 Pro and M5 Max. There is no 16-inch M6 on it.

Wireless is an N1, with Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread. The box includes a 70W adapter. Apple says a 96W adapter, or a larger one, can reach about 50 percent in 30 minutes. The battery is 72.4 watt-hours. The sheet says up to 24 hours of video streaming and up to 16 hours of wireless web. The release calls 24 hours the longest battery life in a Mac. Colors are space black and silver.

Wednesday, October 28, is still the Pro and tell event. This desk already filed the report that the event is a touch-screen MacBook Pro. Today's release is a different laptop. It is the M6 in the chassis on the current spec sheet.

The chip is new. The laptop around it is the one already on the spec sheet.
