The 12VHPWR was never in the thermal test
A pickup PCB soldered to the 12VHPWR header routes current through two 8-pin PCIe connectors, and at 550 W for 48 hours the wires held below 40 °C.

A pickup PCB soldered to the 12VHPWR header contacts feeds two 8-pin PCIe connectors, and the card ran at 550 W for 48 hours with wire temperatures below 40 °C, including at the joint. The original cable stays plugged in. The mod is reversible because the PCB sits on the existing board rather than the GPU PCB.
The subheadline reads "keeps cables below 40 °C," which is a fair summary of what was measured. The headline, though, says the mod reduces 12VHPWR load, and that is where the two statements diverge. The document never reports the temperature of the 12VHPWR connector itself; it reports wire temperature. The connector is still carrying current, and its thermal state is the number that matters for the failure mode that started this conversation.
At roughly 3 A per conductor across six added wires, the new path carries about 18 A, and the 12VHPWR still carries the remainder of the 550 W draw. The mod lowers per-conductor current on the added path, but it does not remove the connector from the circuit. A buyer who solders this PCB has voided the warranty and gained a measurement of the wires, not of the part that actually cracked in the field. The 40 °C figure is a wire number, not a connector number.
The 12VHPWR connector temperature at 550 W was not recorded. The exact current split between the two 8-pin connectors was not broken out. The PCB part number and schematic are not in the document. None of those gaps changes the 3 A figure, but they leave the one question that matters unanswered.
The 3 A per conductor figure means the added path carries roughly 18 A, leaving the 12VHPWR to carry the rest of the 550 W draw. The mod reduces per-conductor current on the new wires but does not remove the connector from the circuit, and the connector temperature was never measured.
Six added conductors at approximately 3 A each offload about 18 A from the 12VHPWR. The connector still carries the balance of the 550 W load, and no thermal measurement was taken at the connector interface. The 40 °C figure applies to the wires and the solder joint, not to the 12VHPWR plug.
Two 8-pin PCIe connectors added alongside 12VHPWR · 550 W full load sustained for 48 hours · Wire temperatures below 40 °C at the joint · Approximately 3 A per added conductor
