OpenAI's 20 percent search claim and the Bing layer its docs kept out of the API
Adam Fry told a November 3, 2026 audience that ChatGPT handles one-fifth of Google's search volume, a figure with no auditable denominator. OpenAI's own developer documentation, posted September 29, 2023, says the Bing search integration was a web-service feature and that API use

| ChatGPT Web | ChatGPT API | |
|---|---|---|
| Browse with Bing | Available | Not available (Jan 2024) |
| Search backend | Bing | Self-implemented |
| Query definition | Web search result |
A community member confirmed on January 8, 2024, that the limitation had not been lifted.
The Verge's coverage of the press event speculates that OpenAI routes a significant share of queries through Bing alongside an in-house index. The thread does not leave that question open.

What the 20 percent figure actually establishes is that OpenAI's search pipeline, at least through early 2024, was not a single system. The web app had a Bing-backed browse feature. The API did not.
For a developer building on the OpenAI API, the search layer is something you point at api.bing.microsoft.com or your own index. Whether the in-house index Fry mentions is in production or still a roadmap item, the community thread does not say.
Still unmeasured: the absolute query volume behind the 20 percent, the name of the in-house search index, and whether the API-side search capability shipped after January 2024.
The documentation contrast is the load-bearing fact, and the January 2024 community confirmation anchors it. The 20 percent figure remains a vendor metric with no independent measurement, and the in-house index question is left open by every primary document available here.
After community.openai.com. We did not report this. The pictures, if any, are theirs.
